I am in love. For some people it comes on slowly over time, but I think this was love at first sight. When I first flew into Oaxaca I fell in love. Of course I love the people and the culture, but there is more than that. People sometimes ask the question...would you rather live by a lake, the ocean, or the mountians? I alwasy struggled with this question. If I were to move closer to the ocean I probably would still struggle with this question, but at the moment my answer would be the mountains. From my first moment in Oaxaca last summer I fell in love with the mountains, and now, living outside of Tlacolula in the midst of the mountians that statement is even more true. Each morning I am amazed once again at the beauty that the mountians have. Each day is new. Sometimes the clouds are rolling over the tops and I am struck by the contrast of the white against the green and brown with the bright blue sky in the background. Sometimes The sun shines bright and illuminates the details of the mountains. Sometimes I can watch the rain storm as it moves down the mountians and across the valley. Sometimes the thunder and lightening over the mountians reminds me of their depths and extent around the valley I live in. I love all of these moments. There is power and majesty in the mountains. They speak of strength and stability, while at the same time holding danger and unknowns. "I lift my eyes up to the hills-- where does my help come from? My help coems from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth" (Psalm 121:1-2). Lift up your eyes... see His majesty and fall in love. I have and do every time I look at the mountains. That is why Oaxaca owns my heart.
