San Lorenzo

For the first three weeks I was the only person in my Spanish class, so I got a special treat one day. My professor is from San Lorenzo, a small town forty-five minutes or so from Rosario. One day, after class, we had lunch together and then headed on a bus to visit her hometown. It was actually a very lovely outing. As we traveled I got a history lesson on the fight for independence of Argentina. I will be failing my professor now because I can’t remember it all, but what it comes down to is that San Lorenzo is famous for the site of one of the most important battles. We visited a couple of different museums as part of our Spanish immersion experience. One was in a monastery and the other is made of 3-D dioramas of the life of Jose de San Martin, the military hero of Argentina and several other South American countries for whom he led the fight against Spain. Then we had coffee together and she sent me back on the bus- telling the bus driver not to lose me on the journey. I have to say, it was a foggy day, and down by the water I was reminded of the Oregon coast with the chill in the air and the fog hanging over the river. It is funny what reminds me of home.

Oh, and by the way, I absolutely love my Spanish teacher!!
