Walking Tour

Last week, one of our outings for the program was a walking tour of Rosario. This was the day that we got to act like tourists as we walked around some of the main streets with a tour guide leading us, and our cameras in our hands. We were feeling quite out of place, more than usual as we walked around in a big group through all of the residents or Rosario (it is winter break so there are lots of people out shopping and lounging in parks).

The highlight of the trip was reaching the Monumento de la Bandera. This is one of the biggest monuments in Argentina and is dedicated to the national flag of Argentina. This is where Manuel Belgrano, the creator of the national flag, raised the flag for the first time (actually on the shore of an island opposite). The tower commemorates the Revolution of May 1810 and there is also a Civic Courtyard and a Triumphal Propylaeum.

We also were able to see where Che Guevara spent the first few months of his life, all of the historical buildings throughout town, and a monument to the Malvinas- in remembrance of the fact that Argentina would like to claim these islands, but England has control of them. It was very interesting, but lots of information to take in. I feel like I better have a fairly good grasp of Argentine history by the time this trip is over...if I can retain all of the information we are given.
