Lent Day 6: Covenant

The covenant I have been reminded of lately is the covenant or promise that my husband and I made to each other on our wedding day. Having a new baby in the house and working to figure out a new normal (and sleep schedule), I have watched my husband live out his covenant to me over and over. He is faithful, hard-working and cares for my physical, emotional and spiritual needs on a daily basis. He is the best friend that I have desperately needed over the last month, since I am not someone that functions well on 5 or less hours of sleep (with those hours not necessarily being consecutive). He is ever present "through sickness and health...and lack of sleep wreaking havoc on my emotions and energy level."

This is a picture of our signing document from our wedding- a brief statement of our vows that was also signed by all of those in attendance at our wedding. It has a history in the Quaker tradition and acts as a guest book, but also as a promise between us and those who witnessed our wedding that the below-signed promise to hold us to our vows that we made. Ideally, if my husband and I were to go through any difficult times, these are the people we would turn to to help us weather the storm. Several of these people I feel I could go to and say "you were there, you affirmed what we were doing, so now we need your help in keeping our marriage together." Thankfully we are not at that place and I hope we never will be, but it is a constant reminder to us that we made a promise and it was not in secret.

God makes us a promise too. Our marriage covenant is a reflection of the covenant God has with his people. He promises to be present if we seek Him.So, as I look at our signing document it is not only a reminder of my marriage covenant with my husband, but the faithful presence of God.
